Intelligence doesn't always look the way we expect it to. Human intelligence is one thing… but what of inhuman intelligence? Is it so alien as to be unrecognizable? Or are there universal constants through which we can communicate? Perhaps there are higher truths not subject to the whims of our perception, and through these we may find that intelligence comes in many guises.

Huzzah! My first stand-alone piece in quite some time! It feels good to have stuff to post here that isn't comics (with due respect to #AngeldevilManga ). Anyway, this one features Dave from my Professor Odd series. Dave is a being from a different universe who is about as alien as you can get: he doesn't have a central nervous system; he "talks" by secreting psychoactive slime; he's not even really a "he" since his species don't have solid genders. Oh, and his name is untranslatable, so everyone just calls him Dave. Despite all this he is very intelligent and perceptive; here he is demonstrating his grasp of geometry by forming the shape of a Pythagorean Theorem with three of his arms.

I felt like painting him, because he is cool like that. Also tentacle-arms. Whee.
