When I was eight I did a crafts program at our local school. I had been unschooled up until then so the experience was rather overwhelming and not particularly enjoyable. From an artistic point of view it was very limiting as well: you were given an outline of what to do by the teacher, guidelines, and made to share equally with the other students (which just meant the sneaks the bullies got all the good stuff). It was not something I enjoyed.
Afterward my mom told me a story about a girl she knew in gradeschool who drew blue horses in class but her teacher made her throw the drawing away because "horse's weren't blue".
That was eleven years ago. I have not been back to school since. There were many reasons for this, of course, one of which was: I wanted to be able to draw blue horses.
Horses are, like dragons, keys to magic and imagination. And they can be any color you like... in your dreams.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watercolors on 8"x10" textures clayboard with white acrylic ink. This was done entirely by brush with no pencil sketch. I took advantage of clayboard's extreme absorbency here to do many washes of color over the background first, and then paint the horses on directly over that. Look carefully and see how many ghost horses you can find.
Blue horses do exist, every artist knows that *waggles finger at said teacher*
so awesome..... i hate it when teachers don't let your imagination have its way....it makes me want to say "hey they're my own darn horses and they can be blue if I frappin' want them to, you don't own them" but i love your horses, and I love watercolors.......i'm actually supposed to be doing a watercolor for my mom right now.......
My thoughts exactly! The whole point of drawing something (to me) is to show it as you like it, not necessarily how it is!
Well, it's a little more complicated than that. You see, I went to Kindergarten and hated it, so my mom pulled me out and unschooled me. When I was eight the school was having a special crafts program that was open to unschoolers, and since I was into drawing I wanted to try it.
But I never "dropped out". I like to think of it as "escaping."
It does have a very dream-world feel to it. It reminds me a lot of a Native American spirit journey almost.
Beautiful painting! What kind of teacher tells a kid to throw away a drawing because it isn't the right color? That's so horrible. What a way to crush a person's spirit. Anyways this is really beautiful.
